Pathology is the branch of medicine that involves studying and diagnosing diseases. By looking at changes in tissue, blood and other body fluids, it is possible to find the causes of disease, show a condition’s severity and monitor the progress of treatments.
Pathology underpins modern medicine. More than 70 per cent of all diagnoses are made in a pathology laboratory. Every single case of cancer in Australia is diagnosed by a pathologist. Chronic diseases, such as diabetes, high cholesterol and kidney or liver disease, are firstly diagnosed, then managed, using pathology investigations, and virtually all preventive health programs rely on pathology tests.

Your test
Your sample may have been collected by your doctor or practice nurse, or you may have been assisted by one of our highly trained pathology specimen collectors. In the laboratory, our expert team of pathologists and scientists works around the clock to report results in the shortest possible time – mostly within 24 hours, sometimes in less than one hour. Our pathology result report guides your treating doctor, who may call on our specialist pathologists to further discuss your diagnosis and treatment. Your doctor has ready and convenient access to our pathologists on a daily basis, for consultation and professional support, to discuss your pathology results and assist in the diagnoses.
Our team
Our pathologists are doctors who have undergone extensive specialist training. They offer an outstanding breadth and depth of expertise and include specialists in all the major sub-disciplines of pathology (biochemistry, haematology, immunology, molecular biology, microbiology, histopathology and cytopathology) and so are able to provide expert and up-to-date advice in all areas of pathology. Our pathologists are leaders in their field and are called on for expert opinion by their local and international colleagues.
Our specially trained scientific team has also undergone years of study and training. They are supported by a network of collectors, couriers and administration people, who ensure speed, quality and accuracy in the process. Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology is fully accredited by NATA in conjunction with The Royal College of Pathologists.
Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology has stringent training standards and, as a Registered Training Organisation, provides nationally accredited training to all collection staff to obtain Certificate 111 in Pathology Collection.
